In a move that would prove to be immensely unpopular with the local lads, recruiting sergeants were sent from Toronto to enlist men into the Toronto regiments, annoying (a polite word) the officers of the Algonquin Regiment. The Legion held two information meetings (they had to hold two because the response from local men who wanted to sign up was very high), but those in charge and had this to report: “350 ex-servicemen from Timmins and the surrounding area registered with the government, flag flying times were made available at the post office, and a registry of ‘aliens’ would be drawn up once word to do so was received from the government.” Locally, things seemed a little frantic right at the beginning of the war, as recruitment fever took over.
